10 (plus 1) top tips for batteries!
Batteries are a perishable item and they will, based on environmental temperatures, eventually self discharge (run out of power).
Follow these easy steps for longer battery life:
Check electrolyte levels - every 30 days in the winter (that's now!) - and be sure it is above the plates. Add distilled water if necessary.
Recharge the battery after adding water. Do not over fill or overcharge.
Charge battery completely at room temperature only.
Disconnect battery cables and clean cables and terminals about every 3 months. Remove any accumulated deposits from the top of the battery.
Before disconnecting the battery, make sure you have made a note of the radio code!
Store in a dry, cool place. Dampness may cause corrosion of terminals.
Batteries may be stored on a concrete surface without harm.
Self discharge is minimised at lower temperatures.
Check the battery voltage every month. If below 12.4volts, recharge overnight.
Never leave batteries in a discharged condition, recharge at least once every 2 months.
A flat battery may not be defective - it may be that it is not being charged!
